An Autumn Night In Glencoe

It’s usually worth the drive up to Glencoe for dark sky photography, this October night didn’t disappoint, the stars and Milky Way were clear to the naked eye through a blanket of darkness. This is without doubt my favourite genre of photography, it’s a pity we don’t get so many clear dark skies

This was an all night session working our way through the valley of Glencoe, stopping off at various locations stopping and setting up the gear. Photography in the dark is extremely challenging, getting the correct composition and settings to capture the maximum amount of data into the camera to work with in lightroom and photoshop to generate something magnificent, or at least that’s the plan? This was my best photograph of the night which has done reasonably well in Scottish competitions.

I’m regularly asked for settings for my Astro however it varies by location, the camera and the lens so there is no firm rule of thumb. As a guide I was using:

Sony A7s ii Sigma 14mm f1.4 Art lens 4000 ISO. F 1.4 20 second shutter A very solid tripod
